Exterior wall glazing provides acceptable interior task-daylighting levels at a depth of 1.5 to 2 times the height of a glazed opening.

A light shelf added to a glazed opening will reflect daylight deeper into a space, and can increase the daylight depth to 2.5 times the heigh of the glazed opening.

Size the glazing area as a percentage of the floor area to be daylit:

  • 10-15% at a minimum, for basic daylighting levels;
  • 15-25% for more adequate daylighting levels.

Make the side walls, back wall and ceiling a light color to evenly distribute daylight and to prevent glare.
